For three weeks I’ve been writing some version of the same happy sentence: the market is broadening, the money is spreading out, more stocks are participating. It was true, and it was good. This week I have to complicate it, because the data did something it hadn’t done in a while.

It got nervous.

The number cracked, then caught itself

Here’s the share of stocks trading above institutional positioning, day by day: 64.1% Monday, then 61.5%, then a drop to 54.2% Wednesday, then a climb back to 58.2% and 59.8% by Friday. Draw it and you get a V — a real dip mid-week, and a recovery that clawed back about half of it.

That’s the first genuine wobble in this data in nearly a month. For weeks the line only went up. This week it buckled on Wednesday and then found its feet. The market didn’t break. But for the first time in a while, you could see its hands shake.

What spooked it

No mystery here, and for once my data and the entire macro commentariat agree on the cause immediately. The Middle East came back. The U.S.–Iran ceasefire cracked, Iran resumed attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, the U.S. struck back and revoked oil waivers, and crude jumped about 5% toward $72 a barrel. Oil spiking on war headlines is the oldest risk-off reflex in the book, and Wednesday the reflex fired.

What’s telling is how little it fired. Oil up 5% and a geopolitical flare-up used to be worth a real correction — earlier this year a similar scare helped drive a near-10% drop. This week it bought a one-day dip that was half-recovered by Friday. It seems oil spikes still matter, but the market has grown less sensitive to them — back in March the S&P fell on 10 of 12 days when oil jumped; from April to June it barely flinched. I guess the dog still barks at the mailman. It just doesn’t bite like it used to.

Now look at who did the rescuing

This is the part that matters, and it’s where my data earns its keep.

The market recovered on Thursday and Friday. But it did not recover the way it rose the previous two weeks. Those weeks, the gains were broad — hundreds of names across financials, healthcare, industrials, value, international, all climbing together. This week’s bounce was narrow. It was led back by technology and the AI-semiconductor names — the exact crowded trade the money had spent two weeks leaving.

You can see it three ways, and they all agree. In my data, Technology bounced hardest off the Wednesday low — better than any other sector into Friday. In the index tape, the Nasdaq gained 1.74% on the week and growth stocks solidly beat value, while the Dow actually fell half a percent and the small-cap Russell 2000 fell too. A late-week rebound in semiconductor and AI-related shares is what pulled the market out of its hole.

So here’s the shape of the week, honestly stated: the broad market took a hit, and the megacaps carried it back out. That’s a narrower market on Friday than the one we walked in with. Breadth finished the week lower than it started — 60% versus 64% — even though the headline indexes were green. The green came from a handful of the usual giants, not from the thousand names that had been doing the quiet work.

I don’t want to over-read one nervous week. But after three weeks of “the rally is broadening,” the correct update is: this week, under stress, it un-broadened. The crowd’s first instinct when the lights flickered was to run back to the names it knows.

The one clean winner

Almost every sector gave back ground this week. One did the opposite: Energy, up 14 points, the only strong gainer on the board, climbing straight through the scare.

And this one isn’t a puzzle — it’s the resolution of an old one. Two weeks ago I flagged something that bugged me: Energy support had risen while oil fell, and I couldn’t cleanly explain it. This week the relationship snapped back to normal and loud: oil spiked on the war headlines, and Energy stocks went straight up with it. The sector that hates cheap crude loves expensive crude, and this week crude got expensive in a hurry. It helps that Energy is also, quietly, one of the two biggest drivers of this quarter’s corporate earnings growth — so the fundamental and the geopolitical pushed the same direction at once. When the tape hands you a clean cause-and-effect like that, take it; they’re rare.

The leaders held, but one of them is tiring

Financials stayed the strongest sector on my board, right at the top even after giving a little back — and with the big banks kicking off earnings season next week, that’s a leadership perch worth watching. Healthcare, last week’s hero, is a subtler story. It’s still near the top in absolute terms, but it was among the weakest performers this week, and my rotation screen shows its momentum rolling over even as its level stays high — the tell-tale of a leader that’s tiring, not yet falling. Last week Healthcare was the name I told you to notice. This week it’s the name I’d watch to see whether the noticing is over.

The outliers, for their part, were scattered — no single dramatic thread like the Conagra print two weeks ago or the Russell reconstitution before it. The most extreme prints clustered, tellingly, on Wednesday’s dip — when the tape gets violent, the unusual trades pile up — and the recurring names were financials and, once again, a steady drumbeat of international ETFs. That international thread has now persisted for three straight weeks. It’s the quietest story in this data and maybe the most durable.

So: healthy pause, or the party narrowing?

The bullish version: this was a healthy pause. A geopolitical scare hit, the market dipped, quality and AI earnings caught it, and the uptrend resumed. Pauses that refresh are how durable rallies breathe. Earnings season starts next week with the banks, S&P profits are expected up more than 20%, and a strong print re-broadens everything.

The cautious version: this was the broadening ending. For two glorious weeks the market climbed on wide participation; the moment it got scared, it abandoned the broad trade and huddled back into the same seven megacaps that have carried it all year. If that’s the real tell, we’re sliding back toward the narrow, top-heavy market that makes people nervous — a market leaning on a handful of names again.

The thing that settles it is specific and I’ll be watching for it: does the breadth re-broaden, or does tech pull away alone? If next week Financials, Energy, industrials, and the broad middle climb with the megacaps, the pause was healthy and the broadening’s intact. If the indexes grind higher while my support score stays soft — green headlines, weak breadth — then Friday’s narrow bounce was the beginning of re-narrowing, and the prudent move is to stop trusting the index and start watching what’s underneath it. Watch the equal-weight, not the cap-weight. Watch whether the thousand names come back.

What this means, by your clock

If you trade in days to weeks: respect the tape’s resilience — it shook off a real geopolitical scare in two sessions, and the seasonal summer-rally window is still open. But Friday’s bounce was narrow, so don’t confuse green indexes with a healthy market. Trade the leaders that are actually leading (Financials into bank earnings, Energy with the oil bid), keep a hand on the exit given the live geopolitical headline risk, and let the breadth — not the Nasdaq — tell you whether the broadening survives.

If you invest in months to years: one nervous week doesn’t change a durable picture, and the picture is still decent — earnings growing double digits, oil’s grip on stocks loosening, an economy that keeps absorbing shocks. But this week was a small, useful reminder of the market’s central fragility: it is still dangerously dependent on a few enormous names, and the first thing it does when scared is lean on them harder. A portfolio that’s diversified beyond those names isn’t a purity test — it’s insurance against the week the giants finally stumble and there’s nothing broad underneath to catch it.

The through-line, one more time: the headlines said the market fell and then recovered, which is true and nearly useless. The breadth said the recovery was thinner than the fall, carried by the few instead of the many. This week the many got scared and the few did the work. Whether that reverses is the whole question for next week.

Here’s a thing about markets that took me years to recognize and trust the simplicity of: the most important weeks are often the quiet rangebound ones. Before building the definitive platform for uncovering institutional participation, I saw “indecision” in the days and weeks when price washed over a range, unable to breakout. What I now see is deliberate development of price zones where the largest players are positioning for the next move. These moments frustrate retail who want endless trends in both directions but are crucial for engineering the liquidity needed by institutions to paint the next leg. Yes, the days with the screaming headlines and the record volume are part of that liquidity engine, but don’t sleep on the quiet ones, when the desks are half-staffed and nobody’s paying attention, and the money does what it actually wants to do instead of what it wants to be seen doing.

This was one of those weeks. It’s story time…

Start with the number, because the number is the story

The share of stocks trading above the prices where institutions are positioned climbed four sessions straight — 55.9% Monday to 64.3% Thursday. That’s the strongest breadth reading in several weeks, an 8.4-point jump in a four-day, holiday-shortened week that most of Wall Street spent mentally at the lake.

And it happened on ordinary volume. Last week I told you the market’s record-breaking Friday was mostly the Russell reconstitution — a mechanical event, funds forced to trade by the rulebook, not conviction. This week there was no such asterisk. No index rebalance, no quad-witching, no forced anything. Just steady, unglamorous, real buying, accelerating into a long weekend. When breadth improves on a mechanical day, shrug. When it improves like this — quietly, on a Tuesday nobody cared about, especially with a large positioning event in the rearview mirror — pay attention.

Now, in terms of aggregate notional money sloshing around, the technology bucket is, and will for the foreseeable future continue to be, #1. Tuesday was June 30, quarter-end, and some of that day’s pop is “window dressing” — fund managers tidying up their holdings so the quarter-end statement looks respectable. But window dressing is a one-day cosmetic. More importantly, the climb kept going Wednesday and Thursday on genuine holiday-thin volume, and that part is real. And if we can agree that positions are the expression of informed institutional risk-taking, then all we need to monitor is post-print price action to determine whether institutions are endorsing or abandoning those theses.

Now the twist: look who was leading

If I told you the market just had a big broad rally and asked you to guess the leader, you’d say technology. You’d be wrong. Technology fell this week, finishing near the bottom of the board at 43%.

Quick refresher on how to read this whisker plot because it communicates a lot:

The sector that closed on top? Healthcare, at 88% — nearly nine of every ten names above a resounding majority of their institutional levels. Right behind it, Financials surged 20 points to 83%, the single biggest move on the board. Materials jumped 16. Communication Services jumped 13. The rally was led by the boring, the cheap, and the un-loved — quality and value — while the crowded megacap-tech trade that has carried this market all year sat the week out.

As a matter of fact, the tech weakness was global: there was clear profit-taking in high-priced tech and semis in Japan, and rotation away from highflying technology in China. The whole world spent the week selling the same crowded things and buying the same neglected things.

The Healthcare tell the headlines missed

Here’s where I think I can show you something the consensus is underplaying.

Everyone’s writing about Financials and the tech sell-off. Almost nobody is leading with Healthcare — and Healthcare is the strongest sector I have, at 88%. So I went looking for corroboration, because a single dataset saying something surprising is a hypothesis, not a fact. I found it in four different places.

My support data has Healthcare first as seen in the sector whisker plot above. My own sector-rotation screen — which uses a completely different, more granular taxonomy — puts Health Care, Biotechnology, Insurance, and Managed Care all in the “leading” quadrant, strong and still improving, with the kind of broad membership (100-plus names) that means it isn’t three big stocks faking a trend; just look at these names all lit green (measuring momentum), you’d have to try deliberately to miss:

Biotech is also quietly resolving its consolidation pattern. This group is even larger and as stunningly and uniformly green:

And the flow underneath all of this fits: the single most statistically extreme print of the entire week was Conagra — a packaged-food company, about as far from a sexy momentum stock as exists — trading nearly 96 standard deviations above its normal size.

When the weirdest trade of the week is a quiet defensive name and the strongest sector is Healthcare and your other screen agrees and you’ve got historically seasonal tailwinds at your back, that’s probably not coincidence - that’s a signal wearing a very boring disguise.

Four instruments, four different methods, one answer. That’s the kind of thing worth telling you about before it’s obvious to everyone.

Two more threads, both pointing the same way

Abroad. The aggressive sweep money this week went international in a way I haven’t seen it do before — emerging markets, developed Europe, the whole alphabet of foreign ETFs, hoovered up in size. If you’re a regular reader, you know this is a thematic I’ve been tracking for a couple of years. This trade might be getting long in the tooth but the outlier prints show foreign developed-market funds appearing over and over at extreme sizes. And the fundamentals cooperate — European stocks had a strong week, eurozone inflation cooled to 2.8%, Germany’s market jumped nearly 4%. Many funds have taken an overweight emerging markets view, explicitly as an alternative to US technology and many news/research outlets are still constantly pushing opportunities outside of the US. If you’ve spent a decade assuming the only game is US megacap tech, there are enough independent voices and all of the evidence I’ve provided from the tape telling you the map is bigger.

Credit. The number-one sweep target of the entire week wasn’t a stock. It was LQD — investment-grade corporate bonds — swept at over $1.6 billion, with the broad bond aggregate right behind it. Aggressive money reaching for credit is a risk-on signal, not a hide-under-the-bed one; it means institutions are comfortable enough to lend to companies and get paid for it. Take a look around and credit conditions are still providing the green light for stocks. The bond market, in its unshowy way, was flashing the same all-clear as the stock market.

So is this the good kind of rally or the nervous kind?

A market led by Healthcare and consumer staples sounds defensive — money hiding in things people need regardless of the economy. But a market led by Financials and Materials sounds like the opposite — those are pro-cyclical, they want growth and a steeper yield curve. This week did both at once, which is unusual, and it can mean one of two things.

The bullish read: this is a healthy broadening. The rally stopped depending on seven megacap names and spread out to the entire market — quality, value, cyclicals, defensives, everything except the crowded tech trade that needed a rest. Broad rallies are sturdier than narrow ones. This is what the early innings of a durable leg look like.

The cautious read: this is a quiet flight to quality. The market is going up, but the character of what’s leading — healthcare, staples, dividends, investment-grade credit — is what you’d buy if you wanted to stay invested but sleep at night. Money that’s climbing the wall but keeping one hand on the exit.

Here’s what I’m really looking for in coming sessions: if Technology starts clawing back above institutional participation levels while Healthcare and Financials hold — everybody rising together — it’s a real broadening, and you lean in. If tech keeps bleeding and only the defensive-and-quality complex holds the line, it’s a rotation into the bunker, and you respect it. Right now it’s genuinely poised between the two. If you trade in days to weeks: the broadening is the trade, and the tape, the sweeps, and the seasonal calendar all lean the same way — lighten hedges and add risk for the summer-rally window. It’s early-July-thin, the leadership is quality over momentum, and a soft jobs number means the economy is “fine,” not “hot.” Trade the rotation — quality, financials, international — not the megacap-tech reflex. And keep an eye on that tech-support tell.

If you invest in months to years: the useful signal this week is participation. A market where 64% of names are above their levels, led by real earnings sectors instead of a handful of stories, is a healthier market than the narrow one we’ve had. The backdrop — a steadying “Goldilocks” jobs market, oil back under $70, a Fed likely on hold — is a decent floor under things right now. None of that tells you what next month does. It does suggest a portfolio built only around the famous seven names is narrower than the market has quietly become — again.

The through-line, same as always: the headlines will tell you what was loud. The quiet weeks tell you what’s true. This week the money spent a sleepy holiday half-session buying health care, banks, foreign stocks, and corporate credit, and left the crowded trade alone. That’s worth more than a hundred loud Fridays.

The most-watched stocks in the world had an ugly week. And the share of stocks holding above institutional positioning went up every single day.

Both of those things are true. Sit with how strange that is for a second, because the whole week lives in the gap between them.

The week had a shape, and the shape was a staircase

Here’s my support data — the share of stocks trading above the prices institutions actually care about - theirs! It read 56.6% Monday and climbed, almost every session, to 60.0% by Friday’s close. Last week this same number fell off a Wednesday cliff. This week it walked up a staircase.

Now hold that against the headlines, because they were describing a different market entirely. The Nasdaq fell 4.5%. The Magnificent Seven — the handful of megacaps the entire index leans on — dropped 5.5% as a group. The SpaceX shares everyone was euphoric about a month ago are now down 25% from their peak. If you only watched the marquee names, it looked like the air was coming out of the thing that has carried this market all year. And underneath those names, breadth was actually improving the entire time. That’s not a market falling apart. That’s a market quietly trading one leadership group for another — selling the thing everyone’s looking at, buying the thousand things they aren’t.

What put the staircase there

So what does the money know that the headlines didn’t lead with? Oil collapsed. The US–Iran peace deal held, tankers started moving through the Strait of Hormuz again, and crude fell below $70 — down something like $25 in a month.

That matters more than it sounds, because energy prices had been the single biggest thing driving inflation higher all year. With oil falling, some strategists now think the inflation peak is behind us, with a “disinflation breeze” blowing through the summer. Cooler inflation means less pressure on the Fed to hike. Less pressure to hike means the rate-sensitive stuff that got crushed last week suddenly has room to breathe.

How will I know if said disinflationary breeze will bring cool winds and comfort over many hot summer days to come? I’m glad you asked, because among many ranked prints hitting the tape at the close today, a #4-ranked USO was gifted. Taken with the cluster of levels in the $105 region, we have a clear idea of current positioning and whether lower oil is inbound:

Not everyone’s convinced. The seasonal crowd will tell you June is historically a digestion month, that the S&P is carving lower highs and lower lows, that the dollar just broke out to a 2026 high, and that there’s still a path back toward 7,000 if support gives way. That’s the honest bear case, and I’m not going to pretend it’s impossible. It’s nice. It’s tidy. It’s a forecast about where price might go.

What I have is a record of where the money actually went — and last week the Fed turned hawkish, yields jumped, and these same rate-sensitive corners got taken to the woodshed. This week the tape ran the whole thing in reverse.

The market healed exactly where it hurt last week

This is the part that made me sit up, because it’s a near-perfect mirror image.

Every sector but one gained ground this week, and the biggest gainers were precisely the names the Fed had clobbered seven days earlier. Real Estate jumped 11 points. Utilities — already the strongest sector on the board — tacked on another 8. Energy surged 18, the single biggest move on the board, clawing up off the floor. The rate-sensitive bond-proxies that broke when yields spiked last week reversed hard the moment falling oil took the next rate hike off the table. The mechanism is almost mechanical: oil down → inflation fear down → rate-hike odds down → the stuff that hates high rates rips.

And the one sector that didn’t really participate? Technology — stuck at the bottom, barely a point higher on the week, exactly where the headlines said it would be. So the scary story wasn’t wrong. It was just small. Tech sold off, and almost everything else healed around it. That’s the “broadening” the strategists keep describing, except with VL data you can see it happening at the level of individual stocks instead of taking their word for it.

You can confirm it isn’t a directional bet by where the aggressive money went. The week’s hardest, most impatient buying — the sweeps — didn’t chase the megacaps. It hit value (the IWD value ETF), small caps (IWM), the equal-weight S&P (RSP), and a wall of bonds: investment-grade credit, munis, long Treasuries, high yield. That’s not a tech trade or even a stock-picking trade. That’s money voting, with urgency, for everything except the cap-weighted index everyone’s worried about.

And this didn’t start this week. Look back at the Fed week — the one that supposedly broke everything — and even then high-yield bonds quietly outperformed. Risk appetite never actually left; it just moved house, out of the famous names and into the broad market and the credit that pays you to wait. Falling oil didn’t start the rotation this week. It just turned a quiet drift into a stampede.

The trade hiding inside the tech sell-off

Now the wrinkle, because “tech sold off” is too blunt and the flow data won’t let me leave it there.

While the Magnificent Seven were dropping as a group, the memory and storage names were being traded in spades. Micron printed $70 billion in aggregate flow this week — second only to Apple, more than Nvidia, more than Microsoft...I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before. SanDisk, Western Digital, Marvell — the whole memory-and-storage complex lit up. And a small memory-linked ticker, DRAM, showed up in my statistical-outlier table on three separate days, repeatedly trading dozens of standard deviations above its own norm. So “tech” didn’t uniformly sell off. The crowded megacaps did. The memory cycle, underneath, was being traded hand over fist. Same sector, different appetite — and you’d never know it from a headline that treats “tech” as one thing.

And then the Russell rebalanced

Then came Friday, and Friday was the largest day I have recorded…ever…yes, again.

Most days this year, total institutional liquidity runs somewhere between $150 and $270 billion. Friday it hit roughly $940 billion — bigger than last week’s quad-witching, which itself was the previous record. The reason is the Russell reconstitution: twice a year, the Russell indexes redraw their membership entirely — which stocks count as small-cap, which graduate to large, which fall out — and every index fund on earth has to rebuild its holdings to match, all at once, mostly in the closing auction. The next one is in December:

Every one of the week’s most extreme prints landed on Friday: Amazon trading 110 standard deviations above its norm on a $21 billion print; and then a parade of small and mid-cap names you’ve probably never heard of — OFRM at 195 sigma, QTEC at 173, ISSC at 156, OPEN at 129 — putting up readings that are statistically almost impossible unless a wall of index money is being forced through them on the same afternoon. Which it was.

It’s worth pausing on what a number like 195 sigma actually means, because the brain slides right off it. A “normal” busy day for one of these little stocks is a person walking through a doorway. A three-sigma day is a rare event — a few times a year, a small crowd sprints through. A 195-sigma print is is like the wall coming down and a freight train going through where the doorway used to be. These are not readings that occur in nature; they only occur when the calendar forces them. And that $940 billion is the same story told at market scale: if an ordinary session is the daily traffic crossing a bridge, Friday was every car that will cross it for the next month trying to get over between 3:50 and 4:00 p.m.

And that’s the honest caveat, the same one I gave you for last week’s OpEx: a huge share of that $940 billion is mechanical, not conviction. It’s funds rebalancing because the rulebook says they must, not because anyone woke up Friday with a view. The trick is not to mistake the machine doing its annual housekeeping for a thousand fund managers making a statement. Some of it’s a statement. Most of it is the calendar.

But — and this is why it still matters — the organic part of the week, the steady Monday-through-Thursday climb in support before the Friday machine kicked in, was real. The broadening was already happening. Friday just stamped a record-sized exclamation point on a sentence the market had been writing all week.

Where I’m watching next week

The bond-proxies are the tell. Real Estate and Utilities just round-tripped a brutal Fed week in five sessions. If the prints keep accumulating there, the “oil-down, hikes-off” trade has legs. If the bid fades, it was a reflex bounce, not a real turn.

Energy is the genuine puzzle. Its support leapt 18 points — the biggest move on the board — while oil was falling. Those two things don’t usually go together, and I don’t have a clean answer. Either it’s beaten-down money rotating into the most hated sector on a mean-reversion bet, or it’s something I can’t see yet. If you have a thesis, let me know in the comments. Either way, here’s the tell that settles it: if Energy’s average sector support score (the dot) moves up and we get some tightening of the box (lower dispersion) and/or the USO print resolves bullishly, Energy may have some legs next week. On the other hand, if the average support score hovers under the midline and dispersion stays high and the USO print resolves bearishly, it was the Russell machine passing through, and it’ll fade by Wednesday.

The memory cycle. If Micron and the storage names keep drawing flow while the megacaps bleed, the “tech is dead” story is going to age badly — it’ll turn out the money just rotated within tech, from the crowded names to the cyclical ones. Even if they decide to cool off for a bit, look at how Mags lit up in the dark pools this week ahead of America’s birthday:

What this means for you, depending on your clock

If you trade in days to weeks: the broadening is the trade, and it’s the same trade the aggressive money already put on — value, small caps, equal-weight, the rate-sensitive sectors, and away from the cap-weighted megacaps. You’d be trading with the tape and with a falling-oil tailwind. Just respect that June is seasonally a digestion month, and a strong dollar plus a wobbly S&P means this can still get messy. Let the prints at the levels, not the narrative, tell you when the broadening stalls. The grown-up money spent this week diversifying away from the crowd. You’re allowed to notice.

And for everyone, the line that keeps being true: the headlines told you what was falling. The money told you what was being bought. This week, for once, those were almost opposite stories — and the quiet one was the better one.

For two days this week, the market got exactly the story it had been hoping for.

The US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding. The Strait of Hormuz was set to reopen, oil kept sliding, and the thing everyone had spent a month worrying about simply…stopped being scary. Stocks did what stocks do when a fear evaporates — they drifted higher. Monday and Tuesday were calm and green. By Tuesday’s close, the share of big and mid-cap stocks trading above the prices where institutions are heavily positioned sat at a comfortable 62.7%. Healthy. Relaxed. Nothing to see here.

Then Wednesday afternoon, the new Fed Chair sat down at a microphone, and the market remembered it had a different problem.

The thing everyone already knows

Let’s get the shared headline out of the way, because you’ve read it everywhere.

Kevin Warsh, in his first meeting as Fed Chair, held rates steady — which everyone expected — and then delivered what the strategists are politely calling a “hawkish pause.” The Fed’s own projections quietly deleted the rate cut they’d been dangling since March. Nine of eighteen officials now pencil in at least one rate hike this year. Inflation forecasts went up. And Warsh, asked about forward guidance, basically said he didn’t believe in it anymore.

The market did the math in about ninety seconds. Short-term Treasury yields jumped, the two-year hit its highest level in more than a year, and the relief rally that had been coasting on cheap oil suddenly had to reckon with rates staying higher for longer. Stocks sold off Wednesday afternoon, steadied Thursday, and went home for the long Juneteenth weekend a little more sober than they’d arrived.

To be fair, not everyone reads this benignly. The more cautious crowd points out that June is historically a mean-reverting “digestion” month, that the S&P is already carving lower highs and lower lows with momentum quietly diverging from price, and that a break of support could put 7,000 back on the table. I don’t lead with that view, but we can’t pretend the bullish read is the only one on the table — it isn’t.

That’s the version everyone has. It’s true, it’s tidy, and it’s not where the interesting part is. The interesting part is what the sell-off was made of — and that’s where I can show you something nobody else can.

The week had a shape, and the shape is the story

Here’s the picture most people never get to see, because most people start with a ticker and try to back into a thesis that gives them a reason to trade it; I start with a top-down approach to determine if risk is getting paid, distill it into the sectors where that is true and then lastly identify the individual names that are the best expression of risk. Right now, the week ended with a bit of indecision:

Roughly 54% of names representing 90%+ of the the stock market capitalization closed above institutional positioning. The progression through the week shows how we ended up here:

Support held at ~62% Monday and Tuesday, then fell almost ten points on Wednesday — to 53.2% — and stabilized at 54.3% Thursday. The Fed didn’t just nudge the market; it knocked roughly one in ten stocks back below the prices institutions had been defending, in a single afternoon. A Friday-only glance would’ve shown you “54%, kind of soft” and told you none of this. The path tells you the market was fine until the exact moment the Fed changed the subject from oil to rates.

But the headline number falling is the boring half of the insight. The half that pays you is which stocks fell.

It wasn’t a sell-off. It was a sorting.

When the support score drops nine points, the natural assumption is “everything went down.” It didn’t. Look at what actually happened underneath.

The names that broke were almost entirely the rate-sensitive bond-proxies. Real Estate fell off a cliff — from 67% of its names supported down to 44%, a 23-point collapse. Consumer Defensive — the classic safety trade — lost 19 points. Utilities, Healthcare, the dividend-payers people hide in when they’re nervous: all hit hard.

And the names that held? The cyclicals. Financials barely flinched (and actually like higher rates). Industrials lost a single point. Consumer Cyclical held up fine. These are the economically-sensitive sectors — the ones that do well when the economy is strong enough to make the Fed worry about inflation in the first place.

Read those two lists back to back and the whole move snaps into focus. This wasn’t fear. A frightened market sells its cyclicals and runs to its defensives. This market did the exact opposite — it dumped the bond-proxies and kept the economically-sensitive stuff. That’s not “risk-off.” That’s the market repricing for higher-for-longer rates with a still-solid economy underneath — which, not coincidentally, is precisely the world the Fed just told everyone it lives in. The tape and the macro are telling the same story. I just have the version you can see at the individual-stock level.

There’s a cleaner way to watch the rotation itself, by rank rather than raw score:

Financials never gave up first place all week. Real Estate slid from the top tier down into the bottom third. Energy never once left the floor — the weakest sector on the board every single session, oil truce or not. And one quiet detail, in the interest of honesty: Healthcare actually climbed the rankings this week — not because it got stronger (it lost ten points too) but because the sectors around it fell faster. It’s the best house on a flooding street. That’s defensive out-performance, not strength, and it’s exactly the sort of thing the rank chart will fool you on if you don’t hold it next to the raw numbers.

The one mechanical truth that ties it together

One more chart, because it explains why this framework works at all.

The top line is where the institutional buy-zones sat all week…basically telling us if institutions repositioned at new price locations. It’s essentially flat — those prices didn’t move. The bottom line is the support score, which fell off a ledge. Same week, totally different lines. And the gap between them is the entire point: the levels didn’t move, price did. The institutional lattice — the prices where big money has historically transacted — is the slow, stable thing. Price is the fast thing that oscillates around it. So when support craters in an afternoon, it’s not that the buy-zones vanished. It’s that price stepped away from them.

Which reframes next week into a single, clean question: does price get bought, like it has before — or do the levels finally give way and the trend actually turns? Everything I’m watching reduces to that.

What the sector averages hide

Quick detour, because it’s the difference between a useful takeaway and an expensive one.

Each colored box is one sector. The dot is the average support score, 0 to 10. The fat part of the box is where the broad middle of that sector's stocks live, and the thin whiskers run down to the broken names and up to the strong ones. Sectors are lined up best-to-worst, left to right. So your eye should do two things: read the dots left-to-right to see the ranking, and read the height of each box to see how much the stocks inside agree with each other.

The ranking itself just confirms the week: Financials, Consumer Cyclical, and Industrials anchoring the left; Real Estate, Comm Services, and Energy stranded on the right. That's the rotation, frozen at Thursday's close. Nothing new there.

Everything above is sector averages — and averages, in markets as in life, are forever being quietly ruined by a few outliers. Crack open the sectors and the spread inside each one is faintly ridiculous. Technology this week is the poster child: as a group it’s slumped near the bottom of the table, the sector everyone’s busy writing off — and yet a quarter of its names are stone-cold broken, sitting on zero support, while another quarter are riding high at 9 out of 10. The same sector, at the same moment, holds both the healthiest and the most broken stocks on the board. It’s less a “sector” than a crowded room where half the people are at a party and the other half are at a funeral, and someone walked in, took the average mood, and reported it as the weather.

Energy is the one genuinely lopsided box. It’s not just low — it’s compressed at the bottom, most of its names clustered down near zero with barely any spread. That’s different from the others. A tall box says “this sector is an argument.” Energy’s short, floor-hugging box says “this sector is a consensus” — and the consensus is nobody home. When everyone agrees that completely, it’s worth at least asking who’s left to sell.

Technology and Consumer Defensive are the widest arguments on the board. Both boxes span almost the entire range — a quarter of their names broken, a quarter maxed out. These are the two sectors where “the sector” tells you almost nothing and the name tells you everything. If you’re going to do single-stock work this week, that’s where it pays the most, because that’s where the averages are hiding the most.

The practical consequence is simple and a little deflating: which names you own matters more than which sector you own. The strong sectors are stuffed with broken stocks; the weak ones are hiding genuinely strong ones. Pleasant as it would be if the market sorted itself into tidy green and red buckets you could buy by the bucket, it stubbornly refuses to. “Buy Financials, avoid Tech” is the bumper sticker. The actual signal lives one floor down, at the name. So the read-through to next week is simple: trade the rotation at the sector level for direction, but let the prints at the individual levels pick the actual names — because this chart is proof that the sector label is the beginning of the work, not the end of it.

Where the floors actually are

I’ll leave the structure with my favorite map — the dark-pool volume profiles for the four major indices. If the support score is price vs. the lattice, this is the lattice itself, drawn in dollars. And there are a lot of dollars: the four charts together map close to a trillion of them, transacted in the dark over the past few months — which is a genuinely strange sentence to be able to write, and one I recommend never fully getting over.

Quick read, because it looks busier than it is. Each row is a price band; the length of the bar is how much money quietly changed hands — off-exchange, away from the screen — at that price; and the bars are shaded by when: pale for months ago, dark for recent. So a long dark bar is a fresh shelf, a price where big money has been doing real business lately. The yellow line is the latest close.

Here’s what matters this week: in all four indices, the heaviest recent shelves are sitting below the current price — not overhead. The S&P’s biggest fresh shelf is parked around 733–739, and even after Wednesday’s wobble nudged price down toward it, the index closed the week above it and bounced off. Same story for the Nasdaq. Small caps actually firmed into Thursday while everything else sulked. In plain English: the floors are beneath price, not above it. The relief-rally buying didn’t pack up and leave when the Fed spoke — it’s still down there, quietly, holding up the floorboards.

One honest caveat, because it keeps you (and me) credible: a volume shelf shows where the business happened, not who won it. A fat bar means a lot of money changed hands at that price — it doesn’t, by itself, prove it was buying. What makes the read constructive is the combination: price sitting above those fresh shelves rather than below them. If next week price drops through the S&P’s 733–739 shelf instead of bouncing off it, the floor just became the trapdoor, and you can now treat that level as resistance.

And then OpEx happened

Here’s the part that recontextualizes the whole week.

Everything up to here — the calm Monday, the Fed crack, the bond-proxies breaking while the cyclicals dug in — was the market quietly forming a view. Thursday was the day it acted on that view, and it acted at a scale I don’t believe we’ve seen before.

Most days this year, institutional liquidity runs somewhere between $150 and $270 billion. Thursday it hit $899 billion — the largest single day I’ve got on record, ever.

A quick word, because this is the kind of market plumbing that sounds arcane and absolutely isn’t. Four times a year, a huge batch of options and futures contracts all expire on the same day — the wonderfully named “quad-witching” — and a mountain of positions has to be closed, rolled, or reopened at once. It’s the single most concentrated liquidity event on the calendar. Normally it’s the third Friday; this quarter, because Juneteenth shut the market that Friday, the whole circus got pulled forward to Thursday.

On the surface, Thursday looked like a gentle stabilization — support ticked up a single point, 53.2% to 54.3%, the sort of move you’d shrug at. Underneath that shrug, close to nine hundred billion dollars changed hands. The surface barely rippled while the plumbing roared. That gap — placid tape, record turnover — is the texture of institutions using a known liquidity window to reposition in size without shoving price around.

A large slice of $899 billion on a quad-witching day is plumbing, not conviction — contracts rolling to the next expiry, index funds rebalancing, and this particular Thursday, the Nasdaq-100 reconstitution dragging money into the five names joining the index next week (ALAB, CRWV, NBIS, RKLB and TER all lit up the tape — and all five are about to become index members, which means every fund that tracks the index has to own them). Some of that liquidity on Thursday was a statement. A lot of it was just the machine doing its quarterly housekeeping.

But strip the housekeeping out, and the shape of what’s left rhymes with everything else this week. Two things stand up and wave.

The semiconductors got bought in the dark, in real size. Marvell printed $61 billion in aggregate flow — second only to the entire S&P 500 ETF, and more than NVIDIA — with $21 billion of it crossing in the dark pools, which ranks it above NVIDIA there too. NVIDIA ($54bn), Micron, AMD, Broadcom all stacked up right behind. Now hold that against the support data, which says tech is still trading below its institutional levels. So here’s the biggest money of the year’s biggest liquidity day, quietly loading up on the one sector that hasn’t recovered yet — under cover of an event noisy enough to hide in. That’s the “building it down here” signature, at scale, with an alibi.

And the most aggressive buying of the day wasn’t in stocks at all — it was in bonds. Sweeps — the impatient, take-it-now orders — topped out in credit: investment-grade (LQD, $1.54 billion) and high-yield (HYG, $0.79 billion) led the entire board. On the very week the Fed shoved yields up and sent the bond-proxies running, somebody was sweeping corporate credit with both hands. Part of that is roll, sure. But the urgency is real, and it’s the single most surprising thing in the data this week. I don’t have a clean answer for it — so I’m filing it as a question worth watching rather than dressing it up as a thesis.

Where I’m watching for prints next week

Here’s the actionable part — where the structure says the interesting institutional activity should show up.

The bond-proxies are where the prints will tell the truth. Real Estate and Consumer Defensive just got dragged 20-odd points below where they started the week. Either institutions step in near their levels and defend them — and you’ll see it in the dark pools and the block prints in the VL platform before price confirms — or the levels break and these sectors keep bleeding. Watch Real Estate especially: it has the furthest to fall and the most room to snap back, so whichever way size leans there will be loud.

Financials are the tell for whether the rotation has legs. They held #1 all week and they structurally benefit from higher-for-longer. If next week’s prints keep accumulating in the banks while the bond-proxies keep leaking, the rotation is real and tradeable. If the financial bid quietly disappears, the “strong economy” read is on thinner ice than it looks.

Energy is the contrarian’s question. Dead last all week, oil truce notwithstanding — which is exactly the kind of universal disgust that sometimes precedes a turn. I’m not calling one. But it’s the one sector where a single fat, against-the-tape print would be genuinely informative, because nobody is positioned for it.

The follow-through on Thursday’s two tells. OpEx gave institutions cover to do two interesting things — accumulate semis in the dark while they’re below their levels, and sweep credit hard into a rising-yield week. The question next week is whether either was a real view or just the calendar talking. If Marvell and the semis start reclaiming their levels, the dark-pool buying was conviction. If the credit sweeps keep coming once the roll is behind us, somebody genuinely wants bonds here. Two clean things to watch, both falsifiable.

One forward-looking note: the dashboard still says risk-on

For all the Wednesday drama, my risk dashboard closed the week firmly in risk-on territory — VIX around 16, sitting in the lower third of its recent range. That’s worth a beat, because this is the one gauge I keep that’s earned the right to be listened to. The logic is almost insultingly simple: when it flips to risk-off, you sell SPY and sit in cash for the next ten sessions; the rest of the time you’re long. And over the full backtest, that simple rule beats buy-and-hold — not by dodging every dip, but by missing a handful of genuinely ugly stretches that do the real damage. The green line clears the blue one mostly by not being there for the worst of it.

A few honest words on that, because a backtest that beats the market is the easiest thing in the world to fool yourself with. This is one signal, on one index, over one historical period — it has been wrong, it will be wrong again, and “go to cash for ten sessions” has quietly missed some sharp rebounds along the way. It’s not a crystal ball; it’s a seatbelt. What it’s telling you right now is narrow and useful: as of Thursday’s close, with all the rotation underneath, it still didn’t see the kind of stress that’s historically been worth stepping aside for. That doesn’t mean nothing can go wrong next week — it means the one indicator I trust to wave a flag isn’t waving it yet. Take it for exactly that much, and no more. I’ll post a note if this flips during the week.

What this means for you, depending on your clock

I’ll close with the part the disclaimers usually swallow whole — but I’ll keep it honest, because the right answer here genuinely depends on your time horizon, not on what makes for a punchier newsletter.

If you trade in days to weeks: the rotation is the trade. Strength is in cyclicals and financials; weakness is in the rate-sensitive bond-proxies. Buying the dip in Real Estate or utilities here means betting against the tape and against a Fed that just looked you in the eye and crossed “rate cut” off the menu. You’re allowed to take that bet. Just know you’re swimming upstream — and let the prints at the levels, not your own hope, be the thing that tells you when size has decided to disagree with the trend.

If you invest in months or longer: most of this week is noise, and you have my blessing to ignore it. Your signal is duration. A Fed that deleted its own rate cut and is now openly arguing about hikes is telling you — about as plainly as the Fed ever tells you anything — that the reach-for-yield trade carries more risk than it did a month ago. That doesn’t mean dump your real estate and your dividend payers in a panic. It means don’t go adding to them on the assumption that falling rates will ride to the rescue, because the people who decide where rates go just quietly took that assumption off the table. Higher-for-longer pays you for quality and earnings, not for yield-substitutes — and the grown-up money, both per the strategists and per my tape, is already leaning that way.

This week’s breadth feels like a market that wants to trend, but keeps checking its rearview mirror. Participation is decent in the big indexes, thinner in the small caps, and the risk tone is “constructive but not yet a stampede.” New highs are trying to show up to work, but they have not filed for overtime.

The S&P 500 still has a healthy share of members above their short and intermediate moving averages, with the 5-day and 20-day cohorts clearly stronger than the long-term 150- and 200-day buckets.

In plain English: more stocks are riding the recent uptrend than are breaking long-term downtrends, which fits a market grinding higher rather than launching in a fresh, breathless thrust. New highs are present but not dominating, and new lows have not disappeared, which argues for steady, not euphoric, risk-taking.

In the Nasdaq 100, the short-term breadth is firmer than you might expect given the index’s reputation for being carried by a handful of megacaps. The share of names above 5- and 20-day averages has improved from recent weeks, even as the 50- and 100-day cohorts remain only moderately aligned.

The weekly return heatmap is still very top-heavy, with the largest tech and AI names pulling most of the weight, but participation beneath the surface is “okay” rather than “only five stocks matter.”

The Dow’s breadth sits somewhere between “boomer comfort” and “tactical opportunity.” A reasonable fraction of Industrials components are above their key trend filters, but the longer-dated moving-average cohorts lag the S&P, reflecting a more uneven leadership mix.

New highs are there, but Dow constituents are not exactly stampeding into blue-sky territory, so the index functions more as a confirmation of risk-on than as the spearhead of the move.

The Russell 2000 continues to play the role of slightly skeptical cousin at the family rally. Price action has improved, but the proportion of small caps above the 50-, 100-, and 200-day averages lags the large-cap complex, and the new-high list is thin relative to new lows across shorter lookbacks.

When small caps do not fully confirm, you usually have a tradable trend in large caps, but the “everything is booming” regime is not quite here yet.

Put together, cap-weighted indexes look stronger than the broad market, with leadership concentrated in the S&P and Nasdaq megacaps while participation in smaller names and slower-moving Dow constituents is positive but not explosive. A more durable advance would be confirmed by seeing 50-day cohorts across all four indexes push clearly above roughly two-thirds of constituents, alongside a clear edge of new highs over new lows for several weeks in a row.

Playbook so far this week: lean bullish but not bravado-bullish. Favor quality large caps and the sectors already showing both strong weekly returns and solid breadth, while avoiding the weakest small-cap pockets that remain below their intermediate averages. Watch for follow-through in 50-day breadth and a cleaner domination of new highs over new lows as your confirmation that this is an advance to press.

Bottom line: this looks like a real uptrend with incomplete participation, worth riding but still worth actively managing risk.

Those are two very different activities, and the gap between them is basically the whole job here.

The tape never tells you what institutions are thinking. People are cagey about that, and anyway they often don’t know themselves. What the tape tells you is what they’re doing — where the actual dollars transacted. And the nice thing about dollars is that they don’t do press conferences. This week, once you got past the smoke, the money did three things worth describing in plain English.

First, the loud thing, so we can move on

Stocks rallied because the US and Iran looked close to an interim peace deal. The Strait of Hormuz was set to reopen, oil fell more than 3% in a single day, consumer sentiment came in better than feared, and the odds of a Fed rate hike next week dropped to roughly 4% which basically means nobody thinks that’s happening.

Good news. Real news. Also news you already had, because it was on every screen in America. So I’m not going to pretend I’m adding much by repeating it. Here it is in a nutshell:

Now let’s go find the quiet stuff.

The shiny object: a company that didn’t exist on Thursday

We should talk about SpaceX, because it’s both important and a little ridiculous, and both of those are reasons to talk about it.

SpaceX went public Friday, closed up 19% from an IPO that was four times oversubscribed, and immediately became the single most frantically bought thing on our entire board — $1.59 billion in “sweeps,” which is the order type traders use when they’ve decided they’d like to own something right now, thank you, price be slightly damned. In our data it shows up with no sector label at all, just a blank space, because it’s so new the machinery hasn’t gotten around to filing it under anything yet.

So here is the situation, stated plainly: the most aggressive buying of the week went into a stock that, the previous morning, you could not have purchased if you’d wanted to.

The part everyone will miss is that the other space stocks fell about 10% the same day. This wasn’t “investors love space.” This was “investors love SpaceX,” which is a much narrower and more interesting thing. When the appetite is that concentrated in the one name everyone’s heard of, it tells you something about how people are feeling — hungry, specific, a little starry-eyed — without telling you much at all about the market underneath. Note it. Don’t build a religion on it.

The quiet thing that actually matters

Here’s the part I’d circle if you only remember one.

The four biggest trades that crossed in the dark this week — the “dark pools,” which are exactly what they sound like and somehow also completely legal — weren’t stocks. They were the index funds. IVV, SPY, VOO, QQQ. Together: about $153 billion of plain, unglamorous, buy-the-whole-market beta, moved quietly, off to the side where it wouldn’t push prices around.

To put $153 billion in perspective, that’s more than the entire annual economic output of a country like Kenya, changing hands in four names, in a week, in the dark, while the news talked about something else. The financial system is a genuinely strange place and I recommend never fully getting over it.

But strangeness aside, here’s what it means. When big money wants to be clever, it buys individual names. When big money just wants to be in the market — to own the whole thing and stop worrying — it buys the wrappers. And it does it in the dark when it would rather not announce the decision. So the simplest honest most probable read at the moment is this: institutions used the relief rally to get long. Not to get cute. Just to get invested. That’s the most constructive thing in the whole week, and you couldn’t have seen it on a price chart if you’d stared at one all day.

Where we actually stand

If you strip out the noise, about 63% of big and mid-sized companies are now trading above the prices where institutions have historically done their buying. Translation: firmly bid, not euphoric. Healthy. The kind of reading that’s optimistic without being the sort of thing that keeps you up at night.

Okay, one chart. I know a box-and-whisker plot looks like something handed out in a chemistry final, but give me thirty seconds, because this is the most honest picture of the market I can put in front of you.

Here’s all it’s doing. Every sector gets one vertical box — read them one at a time. The dot is that sector’s average support score: how far above their institutional positioning the stocks are sitting, on a scale of 0 to 10. The box is where the broad middle of the pack lives, and the line through it is the run-of-the-mill name. The thin whiskers stretch down to the stragglers and up to the stars. So a tall box means the stocks in that sector wildly disagree with each other. A short box hugging the top means they’re all in good shape together.

The sectors are lined up left to right, best-supported to weakest, and the first thing your eye should catch is the slope. It runs downhill — from Real Estate, the banks, and the consumer cyclicals on the left, over to Technology and Communication Services way out on the right.

Which, when you think about it, is exactly the market you’d expect in a week when oil fell and rate hikes came off the table. The boring, rate-sensitive, oil-sensitive stuff is standing tallest. The expensive growth names everyone usually obsesses over are bringing up the rear. Value is leading. Quietly, the way it tends to.

Now here’s the part a simple ranking would’ve hidden from you, and the reason I wanted you to see the whole boxes. Every sector — even the strong ones — has a whisker running all the way down to zero. There is no sector where everything works. Real Estate is leading, and Real Estate still owns some completely broken stocks. Tech is lagging, and Tech is still full of names quietly doing fine.

One more small thing, because it’s lovely once you see it: in the leading sectors, the dot sits a little below the middle line of the box. That’s not a glitch. It means most of the names are genuinely strong, and a small handful of broken ones are quietly dragging the average down. The typical real-estate stock is in better shape than its own sector average lets on. (Averages are like that. Forever being ruined by a few bad actors — in markets, and in life.)

So the plain-English version: this chart tells you the odds, not the answer. Being in a strong sector means you’ve got the wind at your back. It does not mean you can close your eyes and buy the whole group. The most useful thing on this entire page isn’t “own Real Estate” — it’s that the spread inside every sector is so wide that which names you own matters more than which sector you own. Pleasant as it would be if the world sorted itself into tidy green and red buckets, it stubbornly refuses to.

Where does all that leave us? Firmly bid, led by the right horses, with broken names hiding inside even the healthy groups. Optimistic, eyes open. Which is about the best you can ask the market to be.

Which is a quietly encouraging thing, because rallies led by companies with a real reason to rise tend to last longer than rallies led by vibes. Not a guarantee. Just a better starting point.

You can see it in the flow rankings: the individual names commanding the most money are almost all chips and mega-cap tech, with NVDA sitting out on its own island.

(That scatter underneath is worth ten seconds, by the way. It plots dollars against share volume, and NVDA is the dot way off to the right by itself — enormous money, enormous volume, completely alone. When a single name is that far from the pack, it’s usually because everyone, on every side of the trade, has decided it’s the thing to argue about this week.)

So far, so bullish. But here’s the catch: those same tech names are still trading below the prices where institutions have been the most active...On average, most of the recent institutional positioning is sitting above current closes. That clearly rings of distribution. And yet, the money is rushing into the stuff that hasn’t actually recovered yet. Which is either smart money buying the dip early, or smart money quietly handing off shares on the way out. Same data, opposite stories.

To figure out which, you have to stop looking at how much money went where, and start looking at where the prices sit inside each sector’s structure. That’s this next one — and it needs a quick word of introduction, because it looks busier than it is.

Each little card is one sector. The bar across the top is the simple version — what share of that sector’s stocks are trading above their institutional positioning (green) versus below (red). The stack of small bars beneath it is the part that earns its keep. Picture each stock’s price range as a ten-story building. Those bars show which floors the institutional levels are stacked on — floor 1 is the basement, the bottom of the range, suggests accumulation at the lows; floor 10 is the penthouse, suggests distribution at the highs. Long bar on a low floor means the heavy volume happened down near the bottom. Long bar up top means it happened near the highs.

Now, here’s the thing you can see only in this chart, and nowhere else on the page — the thing that turns “tech is weak” from a fact into a story.

Look at Technology and look at Energy. On the simple top bars, they’re near-twins: both weak, both sitting around 47–50% above their levels. If all you had was the support score, you’d shrug and lump them together as “the laggards.” But look at the floors, and they’re not twins at all — they’re opposites. Energy’s levels are stacked down low, on the bottom few floors, with price sitting just above them. That’s a sector that fell, built a base, and is starting to lift off the ground. Tech’s levels are stacked up on the middle and upper floors — and price is sitting below them. That’s a sector trading underneath its own crowd, with all that institutional buying hanging overhead on the floors above you.

Quick litmus test: let’s check the relative strength of SPY vs MAGS - the Roundhill Magnificent 7 ETF. Just go to Trading view and in the ticker box, instead of typing a simple symbol, let’s do a little math: SPY divided by MAGS or SPY/MAGS. If the resultant chart is going up, SPY is showing more relative strength than the darling tech names of our times; if it’s going down, SPY is underperforming these tech names:

You have to ask yourself, SPY rallied hard out of the whole this week, what happened to the Mag7?

That’s the whole puzzle, in one picture. Energy’s weak score is constructive — price has lifted off its floor. Tech’s weak score is unresolved — price is pinned right beneath a ceiling of levels, with fresh money piling in underneath it. Two identical-looking numbers, two completely different situations, and you’d never know it from the headline.

So no, this chart doesn’t tell me whether the tech buying is accumulation or distribution. What it does is something better and more honest: it shows me why tech is the one I genuinely can’t call. It’s the only major sector where the money and the structure are in a standoff — dollars flooding in, price stuck just below the levels those dollars have to reclaim. Energy isn’t a puzzle; it’s quietly basing. Tech is the puzzle, and now you can see exactly where the argument is being had: on the floors just above today’s price.

Which gives us a clean thing to watch — and that’s where I’ll pick it up next.

Do the tech names climb back above their levels, or not?

If the semis reclaim that ground over the next week, the dip-buyers were right, the rally broadens out, and this starts to look like the real thing. And here’s the whole idea: instead of asking how much institutions bought this week, these ask at what prices they’ve been doing their off-exchange business — going back about eighteen weeks.

Three things to look at, and then the payoff.

The bars are shelves. Each row is a price band, stacked from low at the bottom to high at the top, and the length of the bar is how much dark-pool money changed hands at that price. A long bar is a shelf — a price where institutions did a lot of quiet business. Think of it as an archaeological dig down the price column: the wide layers are where the money is buried.

That’s not a problem, exactly; it’s what a strong run looks like. But it does mean small caps have gotten a little ahead of their own floor, with more air beneath them than the big indices have. Something to keep half an eye on if the mood sours.

Under the hood, breadth is wobbling rather than outright collapsing: you can see more names slipping below shorter moving averages while longer-term cohorts are still hanging on. It feels more like a trend under pressure than a fresh thrust, with risk tone flipping from “buy the AI story” to “prove it with numbers.”

In the S&P 500, the breadth table tells a mixed story. Shorter lookbacks show a noticeable pickup in new lows alongside a drop in the share of names above their near-term moving averages, while longer windows still show new highs ahead of new lows and a decent chunk of the index holding above the 100- to 200-day lines.

The new highs vs new lows table still leans positive, with today’s new highs outnumbering new lows across most lookbacks, but the edge is not nearly as decisive as it was when the index was effortlessly printing fresh highs. On the one-week heatmap, the selling hit the big, AI-adjacent winners hardest, which is exactly what you would expect when crowded leadership finally gets taken to the woodshed.

Big tech and AI got hit hard, but the broad market was not exactly in roaring health going into this, with a meaningful share of S&P and Nasdaq names already below their 50- and 100-day moving averages and Russell breadth still mediocre. Participation would need to improve from here to confirm a durable advance: you want to see the 50-day cohorts in all four indices push convincingly north of 60 percent and new highs consistently beating new lows across multiple lookbacks, ideally with small caps joining rather than lagging. If instead we see the long-term cohorts (150- and 200-day) start to roll over and new lows steadily build, that would be a much cleaner warning that the uptrend is transitioning into something more sinister.

The playbook for the week ahead is to respect the damage in leadership without assuming the whole structure is broken. Favor quality large caps and sectors where a solid majority of names are still above their 100- and 200-day moving averages, and be selective rather than heroic in the AI and high-beta complex until the short-term breadth numbers stabilize and new lows stop expanding. Avoid leaning too hard into small caps or speculative corners while Russell breadth is still weak, and keep an eye on whether the S&P and Nasdaq 100 can rebuild their 20- and 50-day cohorts after this shock; if they cannot, the path of least resistance remains choppy to lower rather than a straight V-shaped recovery.

Bottom line: breadth is bent but not broken, and until more of the market can reclaim the 50-day and push new highs meaningfully above new lows, any bounce in the leaders should be treated as a trade first and a trend second.

The NAAIM Exposure Index (National Association of Active Investment Managers Exposure Index) measures the average exposure to U.S. equity markets as reported by its member firms. At this level, managers are more vulnerable to being forced sellers on a sharp drawdown than they are positioned to be opportunistic buyers on a dip. The latest daily read is just under 1.0, with the recent 10‑day moving average highlighted around the high‑0.7s, which lines up with other commentary noting a 0.78 ten‑day average, the lowest since mid‑2025. That kind of sub‑0.8 regime tends to show up when traders are crowding the call side and using fewer index or ETF puts as tail hedges, which usually translates into shallower initial pullbacks but also less downside protection if volatility really kicks up. The fact that this low put/call regime comes after a strong equity run fits the pattern of optimism re‑accelerating just as some of the leadership is getting hit. If the total put/call and its ten‑day average push back above roughly 1.0, that would be my signal that fear is finally starting to show up in actual protection buying and that the tape may be closer to a cleansing low; if the ratio stays pinned in the 0.7–0.8 band while prices chop, it argues for continued vulnerability to a sharper air pocket if another shock arrives.

The Merrill Lynch Option Volatility Estimate [MOVE] Index from BofAML and the CBOE Volatility Index [VIX] respectively represent market volatility of U.S. Treasury futures and the S&P 500 index. They typically move in tandem but when they diverge, an opportunity can emerge from one having to “catch-up” to the other.

Bond volatility and equity volatility are not screaming at each other, but bonds are still the louder voice. The MOVE index is sitting in the low‑70s, while the VIX is around the mid‑teens, roughly 16, which is also what the macro data sets have as the latest VIX print.
